Build Landing Pages: Best Free Tools for Beginners

Ram Ashare··4 min read

A message came in at 8:40pm on a Tuesday: "need a landing page live by tomorrow evening, we're launching." I said yes before checking whether I actually had a tool set up for this. I didn't.

What followed was four different attempts in one evening, and only one of them actually worked under that kind of time pressure. Here's the honest rundown, because the "best tools" lists online rarely mention what breaks when you're actually racing a deadline.

Attempt one: Carrd

I'd heard of Carrd from a Reddit thread months earlier and never used it. Signed up, picked the free tier, chose a template that looked close enough to what a product launch needed.

This was genuinely the fastest option. Basic structure, hero section, a features block, one call-to-action button, a contact form, came together in about 24 minutes. Drag and drop, no real confusion about where anything went.

Then the wall: the free plan doesn't allow a custom domain. The client had their own domain and wanted the page on it, not on some Carrd subdomain. Stuck.

Attempt two: Google Sites

Thought maybe Google Sites would solve the domain problem since it connects through Google Workspace. Also completely free, and no page limit at all, which was a genuine plus.

The design felt noticeably more basic than Carrd, though. Blockier, fewer layout options. But the client didn't have a Workspace account set up either, so the domain issue followed me here too.

Small standalone thought: I hadn't expected the free-and-unlimited option to also be the least flexible one. That seemed backwards at first.

Attempt three: Framer's free tier

Framer looked far more capable, genuinely professional-grade design tools, smooth animations, the kind of layout options that make a page feel expensive. Learning the interface, though, ate close to 40 minutes before anything clicked.

Once it clicked, the output looked noticeably better than the other two. But burning 40 minutes just understanding the tool, at 9:30pm, with a deadline the next evening, wasn't a great trade.

And the free tier had the exact same custom domain restriction. Publishing without a paid plan means living on Framer's own subdomain.

What actually shipped

I went back to Carrd and told the client something close to: "let's launch on our subdomain tonight, move it to your domain tomorrow once it's live." They agreed, mostly because the alternative was missing the launch window entirely.

The page went live that night on something like productname.carrd.co. The next morning I upgraded to Carrd Pro for Rs 720 (client covered it), connected the actual domain, took about 18 minutes.

Not the clean solution I'd have wanted going in. But the deadline got met, and honestly, that mattered more than which tool looked prettiest in a portfolio screenshot.

The actual lesson buried in all this

Every tool has a specific trade-off, and none of them give you everything. Need speed above all else, Carrd. Need zero cost and no page limits at all, Google Sites, but you're trading away design quality. Have time to learn something and want it to look expensive, Framer.

Actually, I'd assumed "free tool" meant genuinely free, no strings. That assumption was wrong basically everywhere I looked. There's always a wall somewhere, custom domain, branding, a page cap, something.

That's the part that surprised me most, if I'm honest.

How I approach it now

New client requests now start with one question: "does the subdomain work for launch day, or do you need your own domain immediately?" If the subdomain's fine, Carrd's free tier does the job. If the domain's non-negotiable from day one, I go straight to Carrd Pro and quote the cost upfront.

Still slowly learning Framer on the side, mostly because the design ceiling is genuinely higher there. Just not during a deadline crunch, not yet anyway.

That client's product, for what it's worth, pulled 290-odd signups in its first week from that plain, no-animation landing page. Nothing fancy about it at all...

Frequently Asked Questions

What's genuinely free for building a landing page, no hidden catch?

Carrd's free tier covers one page with no time limit, which is enough for most single-offer launches. Google Sites is also free with no page limit at all, though the design options feel noticeably more basic.

Do you need to know how to code?

No. Every tool mentioned here is drag-and-drop, no code involved anywhere. The actual hard part turned out to be writing the copy, not arranging the blocks.

What's the catch with free landing page builders?

Custom domain connection is usually locked behind a paid plan, and some tools stamp their own branding on the free version. Carrd's free plan allows 3 pages but no custom domain until you upgrade.

How much can you reasonably charge a client for building one?

A simple single-page site built on something like Carrd runs Rs 1,800 to Rs 4,200 for beginners, in our experience. A more built-out, multi-section site using something like Framer can go Rs 6,000 to Rs 14,000 depending on scope and how demanding the client is.

Which tool is fastest to actually launch something?

Carrd, by a clear margin, once the content is ready. A basic page came together in about 24 minutes in this case. Framer looks more polished but the learning curve ate close to three hours the first time around.
