India's Gig Economy: What Changed in 3 Years

Ram Ashare··6 min read

Short answer: Gig work means projects instead of a salary. Over three years my writing rate went from Rs 1.60 to about Rs 2.60 a word, while the number of sellers competing with me roughly quadrupled and AI cut my time per article in half. My income in a single year ranged from Rs 16,900 to Rs 41,200. The skill compounds. The security never arrives.

In 2023, the first thing a new client asked me was what my rate was.

Now the first thing they ask is whether I write it myself or use AI.

That is the whole shift, compressed into one question. And it changes more about this work than any rate card does.

What gig work actually is, without the definition

You get paid per project. Not per month, not by one company.

In a given month I might work for nine different people. One wants a single article, one wants four, one disappears after a single job. Delivery riders, cab drivers, online tutors, designers, editors, all of it counts.

The part that gets left out of every explainer: there is no boss, and there is also no floor. No provident fund. No paid leave. Get sick for a week and that week simply does not pay.

My rate: Rs 1.60 to Rs 2.60 a word

When I listed my first gig on Fiverr, the price was Rs 800 for 500 words. That is Rs 1.60 a word.

Today I charge Rs 2,350 for a 900-word article, which works out to roughly Rs 2.60 a word.

So about 1.6 times in three years. On paper, fine.

Except Fiverr takes 20 percent of that Rs 2,350, so Rs 1,880 actually reaches me. Every platform sets its own cut and its own rules, and nobody mentions that part when you are starting out. And everything I buy got more expensive across those same three years. The real increase is a lot thinner than the headline number.

Actually, that is not quite the full picture. Direct clients, the ones who find me outside any platform, pay the whole amount. That gap took me until the third year to properly notice, which in hindsight was a slow thing to work out.

Competition: from about 50 sellers to over 200

This is the real change. Not the rate.

In 2023, searching "Hindi content writing" on Fiverr showed me somewhere near 50 sellers. I never counted properly, but it filled roughly one page.

That same search now returns more than 200.

And that is just my corner. Design, video editing, data entry, the same thing happened everywhere. A lot of people moved into this work after the lockdown years and then never moved back out.

My first order took 47 days to arrive. A beginner entering that crowd today could easily wait longer than I did.

AI gave me speed, not demand

In early 2024 I used ChatGPT on a paid job for the first time. A 900-word article was done in 73 minutes. The same job used to take me 2 hours 30 minutes.

So I assumed the obvious thing. Double the output, double the money.

That did not happen.

My speed doubled and client demand did not move. I finish an article in half the time now, but nobody hands me twice as many articles. The hours came back to me. The income mostly did not.

There is a second edge to it as well. When the work takes me half as long, the client often knows that too. Asking for a higher rate gets awkward when the person paying believes the job just got easier.

The client who left in February

I had one steady client. Four articles a month, Rs 6,500, reliable for 14 months straight.

That works out to Rs 1,625 an article, below my usual rate. I priced it low deliberately, because knowing that money was coming at the start of every month was worth more to me than the margin.

In February 2026 he messaged to say his team was getting an in-house AI tool and they would not be commissioning writing from outside any more. That was the whole message.

Rs 6,500 a month, gone in two lines. The following month I finished at Rs 16,900, the worst month of that year. My best month that same year was Rs 41,200.

Those two numbers are eleven months apart in the same calendar. That is what this work actually looks like, and it is the part missing from every video about earning from home.

What I expected, and what happened instead

Three years ago I believed that if I got good enough, the rate would climb on its own, and eventually I would have enough clients to pick between them.

Half right.

The rate climbed, but never by itself. I had to ask every single time, and twice the answer was no. Clients did arrive, but the position where you choose between them never showed up, because the moment one leaves you are filling a hole rather than sorting through options.

What I had backwards was this: skill gets you the job, but repeat clients are what protect the income. Finding a new client costs me three or four days every time. An existing one sends work in a single WhatsApp message.

So these days I pay less attention to my rate and more to who is likely to come back.

So what about the future? My honest answer

I cannot predict it. Plenty of people online will, and you can listen to them, but do not move your own money on the strength of it.

All I can report is what happened to me. The work that vanished first was the work that looked like a template. Product descriptions, short SEO filler, generic social captions. Which is to say: exactly the kind of job my very first order was, three product descriptions for Rs 640.

What survived had something in it that does not show from the outside. Understanding a client's business, catching the way their customers actually talk, noticing the thing that is wrong. The real money in content writing sits in that part too.

So what am I doing about it? Two things. Pushing harder on direct clients than on platform work, because that 20 percent stays with me. And learning one more skill that sits next to writing, so that one client leaving does not break a whole month.

Three years of this did not make me much richer. It made me considerably better informed. And honestly, in year one I knew none of the above.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the gig economy actually mean?▼

Work arrives per project instead of per month. You are not an employee of one company, you handle separate jobs for many clients. Freelance writing, design, delivery, driving, tutoring all sit inside it. No fixed salary, no fixed boss, and no fixed safety net either.

How much did your freelance rate rise in three years?▼

My Hindi writing rate went from Rs 1.60 a word in 2023 to around Rs 2.60 now, so roughly 1.6 times. That sounds better than it is. Fiverr takes 20 percent of anything earned on the platform, and prices for everything else rose over the same three years, so the real gain is much smaller than the number suggests.

Has AI ended freelance writing?▼

No, but it changed the arithmetic. A 900-word article used to take me 2 hours 30 minutes and now takes 73 minutes. My speed roughly doubled. Client demand did not, and in February 2026 one client moved his writing to an in-house AI tool and stopped hiring me. Both of those are true at once.

What is the hardest part of gig work?▼

Income is not the same twice. My best month was Rs 41,200 and a month in that same year closed at Rs 16,900. There is no provident fund, no paid leave, and a week of illness is a week without pay. Platforms also take their cut before you see anything.

Is it harder to start now than it was three years ago?▼

Harder. When I listed a Hindi content writing gig, that search showed me somewhere around 50 sellers. The same search now shows over 200. My first order took 47 days to arrive, and in that crowd a beginner could easily wait as long or longer.
