Sell Canva Templates on Etsy from India: Is It Possible?

My cousin was getting married, and nobody in the family had any design experience for the invitation. I figured I'd try Canva myself.

The first listing I assumed would go nowhere

That second listing showed up in search results far more than the first ever had. Honestly, I'd assumed design quality was the whole game. What actually became clear is that titles and tags matter just as much, because a beautifully designed template nobody can find might as well not exist.

What the actual workflow looks like

The process is the same for every new template: design it in Canva, generate a "template link" (a Canva feature that produces a shareable link letting anyone make their own editable copy), build the Etsy listing around that link, upload mockup thumbnails, and set a price.

Most of the time goes into the mockup images, since that's what makes a listing actually look appealing while someone's browsing. One complete listing takes roughly 2 to 3 hours from start to finish, and design work itself is only about 40% of that.

The real numbers, seven months in

There are 14 templates in the shop right now. Total sales across 7 months: 61. Average price sits between $7 and $12.

Total revenue has come to roughly $412, which works out to about $340 after Etsy's fees are subtracted. Converted to rupees, that's around Rs 28,600.

Not life-changing income, honestly, nowhere close to replacing a salary. But it's genuinely passive in a way very little freelance work actually is. A template made once keeps selling without any repeat effort. The single best performer is a plain minimalist resume design that's sold 23 copies on its own.

The mistake I keep seeing other sellers make

I joined a Facebook group for Etsy sellers at some point. A lot of people in there complain that sales aren't coming in, and when you look at their listings, the thumbnails are usually generic, just a flat screenshot of the template with no styled mockup at all.

I'd made exactly that mistake with my first listing too. Once I started adding proper mockups, a template shown on a phone screen, or a printed card sitting on a styled table, click-through rates noticeably improved.

Not at all. Selling Notion templates follows a strikingly similar model, just on a different platform. And if Canva already feels comfortable to you, designing logos to sell on Fiverr is a related skill too, both lean on Canva, they just differ in how the finished work gets delivered. Writing and selling an ebook falls into that same "build once, sell repeatedly" category as well, just in a different format entirely.

Slowly branching into more niches now, with a resume template series and a social media kit both in the works. Still figuring out how Etsy's search algorithm actually ranks things, and some weeks it genuinely feels like...
