Webflow Freelancing: Rs 58,300, Then Rs 19,000

Ram Ashare··6 min read

One month he invoiced Rs 58,300. The next month he invoiced Rs 19,000.

Same skill, same portfolio, same city. Three projects happened to land together in October: a cafe site at Rs 24,000, a personal portfolio at Rs 22,300, and an agency subcontract at Rs 12,000. Then nothing closed in November. He sent me screenshots of both months, a few weeks apart, and the second one came with a single line: "this is the part nobody mentions."

He's right, so let me start there rather than at the end.

"No code" is the wrong description

Before Webflow he made logos and social media graphics. Fiverr gigs at around Rs 600. He knew Photoshop and Figma well and had never touched a website.

A client once asked whether he could turn a design he had made into an actual site. He said no. That project was worth about Rs 14,000 and it went to somebody else, which bothered him for months, because he had designed the thing. He just couldn't put it on a screen.

So he tried Webflow, and called me in week one to say the marketing was a lie.

He had a point. You never write a line of code in Webflow. But you do need the box model. You need flexbox. You need to know what padding does that margin doesn't, and what position: absolute actually means. Webflow doesn't remove any of that, it just gives it a visual interface. What CSS does with text, Webflow does with a mouse.

Which is why people who arrive expecting something effortless stall almost immediately.

For a designer, though, that same fact flips into an advantage. He already had the instinct for spacing and alignment. All he needed were names for things he had been doing by feel for years.

Five weeks, and a site that took six days

Webflow University is free, and genuinely complete. He gave it two hours a day.

After roughly five weeks he decided he could charge for it. The first real project was a four-page site for a dental clinic.

It took six days. The same job now takes him two.

The six days went to responsive layout, because he had misunderstood how it works. Everything looked right on desktop and fell apart on a phone. Webflow lets you set properties per breakpoint, and he was fixing mobile, breaking desktop, fixing desktop, breaking mobile.

The thing he worked out late: pick a direction and go one way. Start at desktop and work down, or start at mobile and work up. Jumping between them is what creates the mess.

The first invoice: Rs 11,400

Four pages, a contact form, an embedded map. Rs 11,400.

Six days of work, so about Rs 1,900 a day. Better than the logo gigs, but not the number people imagine when they hear about web design.

He priced it low deliberately, because he needed something to show. I think that was correct. My own first WordPress site went for Rs 2,800 and I paid for the domain myself. A first project isn't income, it's evidence.

His range now sits between Rs 22,000 and Rs 45,000. What moves it is page count and animation. Animation is Webflow's real strength and also the thing that quietly eats days.

The hosting conversation that kills deals

This is the part I had never read anywhere, and it came up the first time we talked properly about the money.

To keep a Webflow site live, the client needs a site plan. Roughly $14 to $23 a month, so somewhere around Rs 15,000 a year before a domain or email address.

A small clinic or a neighbourhood shop hears that and visibly recoils. They came in thinking a website is a thing you buy once. Now it's a subscription, forever, for something they can't really evaluate.

Three of his deals collapsed on precisely this. Design approved, price agreed, then the hosting line came up and the client went quiet.

So he now raises it in the first meeting instead of the last. Clients who accept it are fine and the work runs cleanly. Clients who don't get a WordPress build instead, where hosting starts near Rs 2,500 a year and they keep control of it.

Why he keeps WordPress too

Holding two tools felt like indecision to him at first. It isn't.

A Webflow-only freelancer has to decline the shop owner who won't pay monthly. A WordPress-only freelancer has to decline the brand that wants scroll animation and a design-led build. Keeping both means the enquiry converts either way, and he decides which tool fits rather than arguing the client into his preference.

To be fair, there's a cost. He's mediocre at WordPress compared to Webflow, and complicated WordPress jobs take him longer than they should. He treats it as the cheaper, simpler option rather than pretending it's his craft.

Where the clients came from

Not Fiverr. Webflow gigs there have sunk to around Rs 3,000, and the work cannot be done at that price.

Instagram did more than anything else. He started posting 20-second screen recordings of finished sites, just scrolling through, showing the animation. Those perform, because a moving website is interesting to watch in a way a screenshot never is.

Small design agencies were the second source. Plenty of them sell Webflow work without anyone in-house who can build it, so they subcontract. It pays less than going direct, because the agency keeps its margin, which is why that Rs 12,000 job sat well below his usual floor. What you get instead is predictability: they come back, and you skip the part where you convince somebody that a website is worth paying for.

The catch is you often can't put the work in your portfolio without asking, and you never meet the actual client.

The third source surprised him: old logo customers. People he'd charged Rs 600 two years earlier who now needed a site. Easiest conversations he had, because the trust already existed.

Who should not take this route

Anyone without a design eye. Webflow will not supply one. The tool takes five weeks; knowing which spacing looks wrong and why takes years, and no software shortens that.

Anyone who needs money this month. Five weeks of learning earns nothing, and the first project will be underpriced on purpose.

But if you're already doing design work and turning down the website question when it comes up, you have the hard half already. The tool is the part you can finish by next month.

He said something I keep thinking about. With logos, clients argue over every detail, because a logo looks like something anyone can have an opinion about. With websites they mostly don't, because it reads as technical. Same designer, same client, same taste, and

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Webflow take to learn if you already design?▼

My friend needed about five weeks at two hours a day before he was willing to charge for a site. Webflow University is free and covers everything. Someone without a design background will take longer, because the tool is the easy part and judging a layout is not.

Is Webflow really no-code?▼

No, and this is the biggest misunderstanding about it. You never write code, but you do have to understand the box model, flexbox and grid. Webflow does visually what CSS does in text. People who arrive expecting nothing technical tend to stall in week one.

Who pays for Webflow hosting?▼

The client does, and this is what loses deals. A Webflow site plan runs roughly $14 to $23 a month, somewhere near Rs 15,000 a year before any domain or email. Small Indian clients balk at a recurring cost they did not expect. Three of his deals died on exactly this point.

What can you charge for a Webflow site in India?▼

His first four-page site went for Rs 11,400, which was too low. The same work now goes for Rs 22,000 to Rs 45,000 depending on page count and how much animation is involved. Agency subcontract work sits below that floor because the agency keeps a margin, and you usually cannot claim it publicly either.

Should you learn Webflow or WordPress?▼

He kept both, and that was the right call. Webflow suits clients who want a design-led site and can absorb a monthly hosting cost. WordPress suits clients who want it cheap and under their own control. Committing to one tool means turning away half the enquiries.
